Domain Information
The aim of elf-fire.net is chiefly to provide a home for the various projects and websites under my care. At the moment, many of the projects still exist only in my head and some need migrating here from elsewhere on the web.
At some point, I fell in love with the term ignis fatuus. (Sadly, the clever domain name ignisfatu.us is already owned.) The Latin term literally translates to foolish fire, or fool's fire. It refers to a strange phenomenon of ghostly light, which often appears at night, or dusk. Science explains it as the gaseous products of biological decay, which may account for many a curious traveller being lured into a bog by a floating light!
There are many references to this phenomenon in folklore and popular culture, in many countries and languages. You may have heard of some of these alternative, synonymous names: Dwaallicht ("wandering light" in Dutch), Irrbloss (Swedish), Irrlicht (German), El Jacho (Spanish boogieman), Elf-fire, Foxfire, Kitsunebi (Japanese foxfire), Hitodama (Japanese human soul), Friar's lantern, Ghost Light, Hinkypunk (West Country term - used in Harry Potter), Hobby Lantern, Jack-o'-lantern, Will-o'-the-wisp.
See Wikipedia for more information.
The domain originally started life as The Fairy Trap (fairytrap.com), but use of a shoddy domain registrar meant that I lost access to my control panel, had no customer service contacts, and thus could not renew my ownership!
Currently, elf-fire.net is registered with and hosted by the nice people at GoDaddy.com
